Beauty prefers to ignore her finite nature while admiring herself in the mirror of Pleasure. But Time and Disillusion remind her constantly that "beauty is a flower that blooms in one day and then dies.“ The debates and struggles of these four allegorical figures inspired the young Handel to compose his first oratorio, originally composed for the Catholic Rome based on a libretto of Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili.
