As the number of school shootings in the United States rises to its highest level in two decades, student safety is top of mind. School and district leaders are constantly trying to determine the best ways to protect students and teachers if there were an active threat. But KCRA 3 Investigates found some of the largest districts in our area are missing a basic safety feature: interior door locks. “As time went by, and events across the country started happening, you know, school safety and safety for students became a pretty high concern,” said Dan Augino, maintenance, operations and facilities director for El Dorado Union High School District. More than a decade ago, the district made the decision to replace all classroom door locks with interior locks. It’s part of a bigger safety plan for campuses to make sure students and staff are protected in case of an active threat.
