The government said about 2 million people could be starving by June, as the drought situation continues to worsen. As at October 2016, 5 counties were badly affected by the prolonged dry spell, but currently, 11 counties have been badly hit, with people and livestock facing starvation.
So far, 1.5 million people have been affected, and 5.4 billion shillings has been spent on mitigation, but the government has to dig deeper and will need another 16 billion shillings to cover the extra people and time, as the drought is expected to extend till June. Sheila Sendeyo with that story.
