The name of this post is WHO KNEW SUBARUS COULD FLY? A brilliant report from Jonathan Lightbody , those who know Jonathan know he’s a genuinely nice bloke and over the last few years has got faster and faster but sadly in the old rally game sometimes the luck runs out….. luckily for Jonathan, he has a supportive team behind him and some gentle piss-taking will of course help him along.

What a fab rally the Nicky Grist was this weekend in Wales, unfortunately, I was the only Gallant & Race Keeper Rally Team competitor and was seeded a pleasing 27th of around 120 competitors.
After a cautious stage 1, we were a disappointing 28th. Pushing on through 2 I got a bit better, stage 3 flowed really well and 4 brought us the big air…..

We were 21st at lunch before returning to the stages.
Putting on new tyres, we headed out to repeat the stages…
Stage 5, a repeat of stage 1 was tackled with a bit more gusto, to end up 1s faster! However, after a few big bumps we had lost intercom for almost half the stage so I had no idea what my navigator was saying and could only drive what I saw, despite Mark shouting loudly, slowing us considerably.
In stage 6 We took 17s out of our stage 2 time, and stage 7 was a relative masterclass - delivering an overall top ten time of the day taking us to 13th overall and a whopping 21s faster than first time in stage 3.
Then we had the last stage, stage 8. The one with the big jump to look forward to….
40secs in, it was all over, I got the right rear on loose gravel and went sideways when I shouldn’t, the car bit into the road and flung us over to the right and head first into a ditch flicking us into the air and pirouetting to smash other corners in for good measure. The result is a poorly looking car missing tyres off wheels, suspension broken, and panels smashed.
I need to save up for the repair. It’s 4wks till the next rally.
