Electricity and water supply are expected to be restored by Monday to residents and businesses along and surrounding Lilian Ngoyi Street, formerly known as Bree Street, in the Johannesburg CBD. These services were cut off following a gas explosion that ripped through the tarred road, sending taxis and vehicles into the air on Wednesday. One person was killed and 48 others were injured. The City of Johannesburg officials gave an update on the gas explosion at a media briefing on Friday.
