Although much of south Lebanon has been painstakingly cleared of mines and unexploded ordinance, in some areas the risk of encountering these potentially lethal objects is still alarmingly high. The danger of these devices is often masked by a bright and innocuous design, and often children mistake them for harmless toys.
In this episode we meet UNIFIL’s Spanish Demining Team. They assist the Lebanese Armed Forces in defusing unexploded ordinance and remnants of war. Crucially they also work with UNMAS, UNIFIL’s Civil Affairs teams and the Lebanese Armed Forces to promote outreach activities that highlight the danger of mines. These outreach events are given to schools and children’s groups. They show young people how to recognise mines, and what to do if they are encountered.
The rules are: Don’t Touch, Move Away, Mark the Area and Report to the Authorities.
