STORYLINE:
Authorities gathering evidence in a human rights case against former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori on Wednesday exhumed remains believed to be those of a university professor and nine students killed in 1992 by a paramilitary death squad.
Peru is seeking to extradite Fujimori from Chile to face charges in connection with the killings - known locally as the "La Cantuta Massacre" - along with other alleged rights abuses during his government's 10-year rule from 1990-2000.
The remains were found in a massive grave and had been incinerated.
On Wednesday relatives looked on as prosecutors and forensic specialists unearthed the remains, which had been buried in four coffins in a cemetery in central Lima.
"Through this deed (referring to exhumation), we will be able to return the identity and dignity to each one of them (referring to victims)," said Gisela Ortiz, whose brother Enrique was one of the murdered students.
Lawyer Gloria Cano, who has been working with many of the family members of the victims for several years, said the exhumation would help to discover which of the victims were still missing and which were confirmed dead.
Peruvian authorities allege that Fujimori sanctioned the Colina paramilitary death squad, which sought to eliminate collaborators of rebel Maoist Shining Path guerillas.
Colina members were convicted of the killings of the students and professor at Lima's La Cantuta University on July 18, 1992.
The group was also responsible for the massacre of 15 people at a party in Lima's Barrios Altos district in 1991- another incident which is included in the government's case against Fujimori.
Peru has filed 12 formal charges against Fujimori, which include the alleged murders of La Cantuta, which were said to have been carried out by military death squads
Fujimori has been under arrest in Chile since his surprise arrival two months ago from Japan, where he had lived in exile since his regime collapsed amid a corruption scandal. He has denied all the charges against him.
