Lachenalia Aqua Lady, sometimes mistyped as Lachenalia Aqualady, is definitely one of the most stunning flowering plants to grow, thanks to the very unique two toned turquoise flowers progressively blending to purple: this very peculiar turquoise colour is inherited by one of the very few turquoise flowered plants I know of, the absolutely stunning and critically endangered Lachenalia viridiflora, also known by the vernacular names of Green-Flowered Cape Cowslip or Turquoise Hyacinth ; the only other turquoise flowered plants I know of are the Green Ixia (Ixia viridiflora), the Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) and the bromeliad species and hybrids in the Puya alpestris - Puya berteroniana species complex; of course, if you know any other turquoise flowered plants, let me know because I absolutely love this rare colour. Of all the above mentioned plants, definitely Lachenalia Aqua Lady is the less difficult to find on the UK market (even if anyway not very common and available only on specialist bulb nurseries) and also probably the easiest to cultivate, as this bulbous plant can be easily grown in a pot with well drained soil, kept moist during the active growth of the plant, and then dry when the bulbs are dormant. Lachenalia is a genus comprising over 100 species blooming in a variety of different colours, and are relatives of the hyacinths, classified in the same Order Asparagales, family Asparagaceae and subfamily Scilloideae, and commonly called Cape Hyacinths due to the resemblance of their inflorescence to the true Hyacinths, and the centre of diversity of Lachenalia species, the Cape Floristic Region in South Africa: some Lachenalia species are also present in other areas of South Africa, in addition to the Cape, and also in Namibia. Another common name for Lachenalia is Cape Cowslip, even if Lachenalia is not a close relative of the true Cowslips (Primula spp. in the family Primulaceae, Order Ericales). Lachenalia Aqua Lady is a complex hybrid originating from Lachenalia viridiflora, Lachenalia orchioides ssp. glaucina, Lachenalia bulbifera, Lachenalia quadricolor and Lachenalia rubida. I found an excellent article about how this hybrid was developed, and of course I wanted to share it with all my viewers, here is the link: [ Ссылка ] .
In addition to the incredible colour of the flowers, the foliage is also very ornamental, with fleshy green leaves spotted of burgundy-maroon, creating a fantastic contrast of colours. In the video you will find detailed information about how I have been growing this gorgeous plant.
