What is Mild nonproliferative retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is classified into two types:
Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
and Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, can further be broken down into 3 stages. Mild, moderate and severe.
In this video, we will focus on Mild nonproliferative retinopathy.
Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy is the earliest stage of the disease, where symptoms will be mild or nonexistent. Consistent high blood sugar from diabetes, is associated with damaging the tiny blood vessels in the retina, causing them to weaken. This can lead to microaneurysms to form in the blood vessels, which can leak fluid into the retina, pissibly leading to swelling of the macula.
Risk factors for diabetic retinopathy include:
Diabetes. Type 1 and Type 2
Race. Hispanics and African Americans are at greater risk
Medical conditions. Such as high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Pregnancy. Pregnant women who develop gestational diabetes, have a higher risk of developing diabetes as they age.
