The Split Squat
-------------------
I think nearly everyone can benefit from a split stance squat and it's variations (lunge, Bulgarian Split squat etc). There is something for everyone and if you think about it, life or sport is rarely conducted with both feet together.
The Split squat in this example is fairly stable because both feet are planted as opposed to a walking lunge for example. Stability means more force. The quads, glutes and hamstrings are all utilised.
A few key notes:
- more knee over toe will increase front quad bias
- less knee over toe will increase glute bias because they are stretched more and there is less front knee flexion involved
- a more forward torso will put load on the front leg and increase quad and glute activation
- a more upright posture will split the load more evenly between the legs and put a greater stretch on the rear hip flexor.
I hope you find this helpful.
Strong and Balanced.
