At approximately 0050 hours, E15 was called to Grand x 38th St for a reported rubbish fire. Upon arrival, E15 reported a large homeless encampment fire which extended into a commercial structure, later confirmed to be a one story, 100’ x 200’ commercial. The assignment was quickly balanced to a structure fire, with E15 receiving LF10, LF21, E46, E14, SQ21, RA15, RA815, BC11, and BC13, starting the 38th St. Incident. E15 began offensive operations with a aggressive fire attack and forcible entry in an attempt to extinguish the seat of the fire. 38th St. IC requested two additional task forces while companies continued to battle the blaze. Because of the intense flames, loss of structure integrity, and arcing power lines, the firefight transitioned to a defensive mode fight. The initial structure was then well involved and extending into an adjacent two story 50’ x 100’ structure. With CM22 heading the operation, an offensive firefight began in the two story structure to defend the bulk of the structure while a defensive firefight continued for the initial structure. After 2 hours and 39 minutes, 99 firefighters had knockdown. The initial structure was a total loss with the adjacent structure suffering major damage. LAFD Arson will be investigating the cause and overhaul continued well into the morning. No injuries were reported however a guard dog was displaced and could be seen frolicking amongst the firefighters.
