NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday pointed to the need for increased support for Ukraine as Russian aggression enters a new phase.
NATO's political leader and the head of the European executive held a meeting on Monday at the European Commission's headquarters as part of attempts at close coordination and alignment in the context of the war in Ukraine.
"We discussed Russian aggression and increased support for Ukraine," the two leaders said in a single message on social networks, in which they stressed that cooperation between the EU and NATO contributes to "security and stability".
In this regard, Stoltenberg and Von der Leyen have advocated agreeing on a new EU-NATO joint declaration, the document that governs the relations both organizations. "We believe that the time has come to agree on a new Joint Declaration," they said.
The latest version of this document dates back to 2018. For at least two years, the organizations have been negotiating an adaptation of the declaration to reflect current cooperation needs.
