We had a chance encounter with a sow grizzly with two tiny cubs of the year while driving through Yellowstone's northern range. It's not terribly common for grizzlies to hang out near the road; likely this momma bear was using the road-and the people- to keep her cubs safe from other bears that might not be comfortable near the roadside.
In this case, the cubs kept wanting to run back towards the woods. It's possible the wildlife watchers made them nervous. It's also possibly they were ready to find a quiet place to nurse! Mom wasn't done grazing, however, so the cubs ran up and down the hill a couple of times, wanting to go into the woods but really not wanting to be far from mom.
