(15 Mar 1987) QUOTE REF INDIA: All over India Hindus celebrate Holi, the festival of
SYND colour, which, legends say, represents the triumph of good
17.3.87 over evil. They were busy painting towns red and yellow,
LN122580 green, pink, mauve and blue. Few who ventured outdoors were
left untouched - including about 20 elephants in Jaipur. To
mark the event, the elephants were dressed in colourful
dresses and jewellery and paraded in a stadium. There was
also an elephant race, and elephant polo. The annual
festival began with the lighting of bonfires to commemorate
Holika's death and to purge modern-day evil. The colourful
celebration is also traditionally a day for renewing
friendships and settling feuds.
