Is Wild Turkey a good whiskey? Let's find out!

This is the 81 proof Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Bourbon, and while it may live in the shadow of the Wild Turkey 101, it's still a great bourbon. Coming in at 81 Proof, it is a softer bourbon, with more approachable taste that makes it one of the best beginner bourbons

It's a Kentucky straight bourbon, so it is at least four years old, but we don't have a precise age statement, only that it is aged for 'up to' five or eight years.

Ultimately, this is a super approachable bourbon, and I think it is fairly priced. Considering that it is lower in proof than Wild Turkey 101, it's also lower in price. So if you aren't a fan of higher proof bourbons, or you want a lower ABV cocktail, this might just be the best bourbon for you!

Wild Turkey 81 Proof Tasting Notes

Nose:
The nose opens with rich vanilla, charred oak and peppery spice, with lots of peanut, somewhere between a peanut brittle and a smooth peanut butter. Sitting with the nose, I got some apple notes coming through, quite like a heavily spiced apple sauce.

Palate:
An initially light mouthfeel with oak, pepper and baking spices slowly builds with subsequent sips revealing caramel, vannilla and butterscotch to balance out the spice.

Finish:
On the finish, the peanuts from the nose make a reappearance, with buttery vanilla balancing out the lingering charred oak spice.
