Lifeguarding Drill: 10 year old child rescue in mid-depth water, rescue through BVM use, 3-rescuer team
GUIDELINES:
WARNING: EXTENSIVE PREPARATION WITH STAFF, CHILD, AND CHILD'S GUARDIAN(S) IS MANDATORY FOR THIS DRILL TO BE EFFECTIVE. DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT PRIOR AUTHORIZATION FROM AGENCY AND CHILD'S GUARDIAN(S).
DO NOT BLOW INTO THE VICTIM. ALL RESCUE BREATHING AND OXYGEN TREATMENT IS STAGED, HOWEVER RESCUERS SHOULD GO THROUGH THE MOTION OF DELIVERING RESCUE BREATHS AND OXYGEN TREATMENT. JUST HAVE AN OPEN SEAL, SO AIR AND OXYGEN CAN ESCAPE.
MANDATORY: FOR SAFETY PRECAUTIONS, ASSIGN A SINGLE LIFEGUARD TO EACH CHILD VICTIM THROUGHOUT THE DRILLS AND IN-SERVICE.
Working with children as victims allows the rescue team address specific challenges: size of the victim, effective and efficient rescue/extrication, and accurate primary assessment with treatment. Most importantly, gentle handling and care of the victim. This is NOT a manikin or an adult size victim.
Emphasis should be placed on rapid rescue, extrication, and treatment. Rescuers must work as a team to provide adequate care. Timing goal for this drill is to complete the drill in under 1 minute.
