Genuine natural black star Sunstone cabochon originating from India. This weighs 9.05 CTS and has been cut into an oval shape. The measurements are approximately 15.1 x 12.0 x 6.3 mm.
The stone displays a well formed star caused by asterism. This phenomenon causes a moving star of light to travel across the surface of the stone when exposed to a light source, either artificial or sunlight. The star on this is quite bright and moves throughout the entire piece. There is also a noticeable Schiller effect giving this a metallic sheen.
The gem has some slight natural inclusions and variations, which is typical of untreated cabochons. There is no discernable damage or chips and is in excellent condition.

The star sunstones have become a house favorite at our shop for several reasons. They have gorgeous unique color, generally exhibit some of the best asterism effects, and are an exceptional value.
Black star sunstones are not technically black in the strictest sense. The coloring on the gem is actually a very dark silver with gold undertones, although it does appear black in certain lighting conditions.
Many people are perhaps more familiar with a related feldspar stone, moonstone. This has a similar play of color but instead of shimmering blues it is more like moonstone's fair sister that exhibits gold, reds and oranges. Even less known is a black and silver version.
