South Korea and the United States are set for high-level talks on strengthening their joint deterrence measures against North Korea.
Seoul's defense chief, Han Min-koo, who is currently in Washington,... says he will seek further assurances from the United States on its "nuclear umbrella" protection over South Korea,... given the nuclear and missile threats posed by Pyongyang.
Minister Han is in the U.S. capital with foreign minister Yun Byung-se for talks with their American counterparts, Ashton Carter and John Kerry.
The four officials will hold their so-called 2+2 talks on Wednesday.
Minister Han and Secretary Carter will hold their annual defense ministers talks,... known as the Security Consultative Meeting on Thursday.
South Korea's defense chief says... the meetings are especially timely as they come amid rapidly increasing military threats from North Korea.
The talks largely aim to demonstrate the two nations' solid alliance... and discuss ways to deal with Pyongyang.
