Chironomids begin to hatch the day the lake's ice melts and continue until the ice returns. The best hatches, on the other hand, can be found from mid-May to the end of June. Chironomids are a major food source for trout. So, without a decent range of Chironomids in different sizes, shapes, and colors, you're out of luck. You may not have the same level of success as someone who has a well-stocked fly box.
