CHRONIC TRAUMATIC ENCEPHALOPATHY: FIRST CASE IN FEMALE PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, also known as CTE, is a neuropathological degenerative change in the brain, which athletes who have suffered head trauma are at risk of developing. Greater degrees of impact appear to correlate with higher risk of developing CTE.
In June 2023, authors Suter et al, in a paper titled “Chronic traumatic encephalopathy in a female ex-professional Australian rules footballer” describes the first case of CTE in a former professional, female footballer. They reported that it was suspected that the woman, who was in her late 20s, died by a self induced death. During the 18 years of her sports career, she had suffered one concussion and four other possible concussions.
Omalu et al in 2005 reported on a recommendation for further studies of retired professional football players to evaluate consequences of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury. He found chronic traumatic encephalopathy present upon autopsy evaluation of a retired football player. Prior to death, the medical history included cognitive impairment, mood disorder and Parkinsonian symptoms.
