The high-level plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons aims to advocate for resuming dialogue and negotiations for nuclear arms control and disarmament and to consider how States can return to a common path to nuclear disarmament. The meeting also seeks to articulate solutions for the elimination of nuclear weapons and highlight the need for renewed engagement for building sustainable peace and security for all.
The work of the high-level meeting will be guided by the theme of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations and will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination in order to mobilize international efforts towards achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
Opening remarks by Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General.
