in scenic settings. Cyclists in action along rural lanes. Athletes exercise all activities on sports ground. Jamaican Keith Gardner jumps hurdles. Welsh women sprinters practice starts. Swimming and diving practice at the new Empire pool and rowing on Lake Padarn. Some competitors site seeing at Welsh castle. Flags at dawn. Macdonald Bailey talks to the British Guiana team as others play billiards and chess, read and write letters while others check their equipment. The stadium and accommodation at dusk.
WS opening ceremony. The teams march past Prince Philip and the batton runner arrives it is Ken Jones. Philip declares the games open and pigeons are released. The starters gun goes off and the male hurdle race starts. Another gunshot and the mens Marathon commences. Ellis of England and Iqbal of Pakistan throw the hammer, Ellis wins. Again the start gun for the 100 yds, after a false start the winners Keith Gardner, Jamaica, Tom Robinson, Bahamas and Mike Agostini of Canada.
A group of Marathon runners on the road, rowers in the eights on a Lake. Canada, Australia and England. Dave Power of Australia is leading the Marathon with Barnard of South Africa close behind. In the high jump Etolu of Uganda does the western roll, Chilla Porter of Australia uses the straddle as does Haisley of Jamaica. The women's hundred yards is lost by Betty Cuthbert of Australia.
Dave Power runs through the streets of Cardiff and into the stadium for his winning lap. Northern Ireland and Kenya battle at Bowls. At Maindy Stadium the 10 mile scratch race is in progress (cycling). The winner is Brown of Australia. In weight lifting we see Greef of South Africa and gold winner Blenman from Barbados. Fencing between England and China.
