Killer Whale Beach Attack – Peninsula Valdes, Patagonia
Video by Bill & Linda Klipp
A first row seat on beaches along Peninsula Valdes brings with it an adrenaline packed experience with Mother Nature unplugged. In April 2016 we spent 2 weeks sitting on the beaches of Estancia La Ernestina, a private sheep ranch straddling the northern coastline of Peninsula Valdes in Patagonia Argentina. Our goal was to hopefully witness up close the unique foraging skills of the resident Orca pod. While Orcas are known to develop hunting skills specific to the environments where they live, some learning to be expert fish catchers while others prefer a mammalian diet. The Orcas of Peninsula Valdes have learned skills like no others on the Planet. They have learned how to intentionally strand themselves up on the beach in order to catch Sea Lion and Elephant Seal pups. Normally one might observe wild Orcas from a boat, but along Peninsula Valdes the best viewing is right from the beach.
On our trip we were fortunate to have Orca sightings 13 of 13 days with beach attacks on half those days. I should mention this was a very unusual amount of sightings, for example in March they only had 11 sightings all month with only a few beach attacks. Having a giant Orca lunge up onto the beach sometimes within 10 meters of us is an experience like no other. We were incredibly privileged to witness these very social and intelligent marine mammals do what Mother Nature does best, innovate.
We hope you enjoy watching our 5 minute video on what we experienced during many mornings on the beaches of Estancia La Ernestina, Punta Norte, Peninsula Valdes.
