Every year over 1.6 billion passengers take one of Europe's annual 10 million flights - expecting a smooth journey, baggage on arrival and without delays or cancellations.
With traffic projected to hit 16.9 million by 2030, more flights could mean more delays, greater safety concerns, increased costs for airlines and higher CO₂ emissions.
Only an Air Traffic Management system that is fully equipped with the latest technologies and operational procedures can efficiently handle this situation. This is where SESAR comes in!
SESAR, with a budget of 2.1 billion euro research and development programme until 2016, aims to modernise the entire European ATM system.
SESAR does so by pooling together the knowledge and resources of the entire ATM community, through a public-private partnership, the SESAR Joint Undertaking.
As the technological pillar of the Single European Sky, SESAR is developing solutions for EU skies to handle up to 3 times more traffic , to improve safety by a factor of 10, to reduce the environmental impact per flight by 10%, and to cut ATM costs by 50%.
To achieve this, the Programme and its partners are delivering a steady stream of tangible technological and operational solutions.
These solutions meet the needs of ATM stakeholders for today and tomorrow and have been thoroughly tested proving their merit for deployment.
More solutions are on their way but some are now ready for industrialisation.
