STORYLINE

A car bomb exploded in the southern Iraqi city of Basra on Thursday as a British military patrol passed.

Initial reports suggest five Iraqi civilians - four men and a boy - were killed and several people were injured in the blast in the centre of the city.

The owner of the car that exploded had been seen parking the vehicle and walking away moments before the blast, according to witnesses.

Residents detained him and began to attack him before handing him over to police.

British forces are responsible for security in the area.

The attack in Basra was a part of a series of attacks that come just days before the anniversary of the start of the US-led war in Iraq.
