In both urban and rural Kenya (and all over the globe), Red Cross volunteers go door-to-door to keep kids healthy. They teach parents about the importance of measles immunizations and help families’ track their kids’ progress—even ensuring they make it to the vaccination clinic on time.
“When I see the Red Cross I feel happy because I know they’ve come to help,” says one mother, who attended the government’s vaccination campaign, thanks to encouragement from a local volunteer.
The Red Cross plays a pivotal role in vaccination campaigns worldwide. Local volunteers use mass media, rallies, door-to-door visits and educational entertainment to reach families who do not have access to routine health services. Whether in distant villages or urban settlements, these campaigns may be the only way for children to receive this lifesaving vaccine. The American Red Cross is a founding member of the Measles & Rubella Initiative alongside the United Nations Foundation, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF and World Health Organization.
