Tokyo, Japan had the "300 Million Yen Robbery" or "300 Million Yen Scandal" on December 10, 1968, and to this day the perpetrator or perpetrators have not been found. A man riding a motorcycle and impersonating a police officer stole 294 million yen (about $817,520) from bank staff while they were transferring the funds. There has been no resolution to the case, making it one of the most infamous heists in Japanese history.
That day, four Nippon Trust Bank workers were entrusted with 294 million yen in cash and bonuses for Toshiba employees at the Fuchu City branch. A corporate car was filled with metal crates containing the cash. A young man in a police uniform rode up to them on a white motorcycle while they were traveling along the Seibu Tamagawa Line.
The man informed the employees that their branch manager's house had been bombed and that the police had received a tip-off about a possible attack on their car. He ordered them to step out of the car for a security check. As they obliged, the perpetrator set off a flare, which produced a large cloud of smoke, causing the bank employees to believe that the car was rigged with explosives.
The phony cop quickly hopped into his car and fled the scene with the loot, taking advantage of the chaos. When the bank workers realized they had been tricked, they called the police right away. Around 170,000 police personnel were involved in the search for the suspect, although they were ultimately unsuccessful.
One of Japan's most infamous crimes, the 300 million yen heist has never been solved. Many novels, movies, and TV shows have been dedicated to theft because it continues to interest and perplex the general public and police enforcement.
The case serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and boldness of some criminals, and the challenges faced by law enforcement in bringing them to justice.
