Dawlish is an English seaside town in Teignbridge on the south coast of Devon, 12 miles from the county town of Exeter and from the larger resort of Torquay.
Dawlish is a traditional seaside town, with a lovely golden sand beach. Dawlish town offers a range of amusements and is centred around The Lawn and Brook, home to the famous black swans. Dawlish Warren is just a few miles down the road and has a beautiful nature reserve with a blue flag beach and lots of Holiday Parks too.
Dawlish is a fantastic family holiday destination with plenty of Holiday Parks in the area, two popular ones are Lady's Mile Holiday Park and Cofton Holidays.
Dawlish is located at the outlet of a small river, Dawlish Water (also called The Brook) and is fronted by a sandy beach with the South Devon Railway sea wall and the Riviera Line railway above. Behind this is a central public park, Dawlish Lawn, through which Dawlish Water flows.
Dawlish Water is home to a range of birds as well as the famous black swans which can be found swimming serenely along the river. Dawlish swans have been resident in Dawlish since at least the early 1900s. Dawlish black swans live with other exotic waterfowl in a small urban sanctuary on Dawlish Water.
There are several attractions in and around Dawlish town, such as beaches, safari mini-golf, a waterfowl centre, a theatre, a leisure centre with a pool, a countryside park and Dawlish Museum.
Dawlish town has plenty of interesting shops and is centred on The Strand, Queen Street, Brunswick Place and Park Road. Dawlish has all the typical shops you would expect in a resort town with gift shops, cafes, a fishing tackle shop, beach/toy shops, bakeries, restaurants and pubs, haberdasheries, ice-cream shops, national chains and many independent retailers. Along Piermont Place, by Dawlish railway station and the seafront, are further ice-cream shops, a restaurant, a cafe and a sports-bar with outdoor seating areas. In recent years, a number of art, craft and antiques shops have opened.
The South Devon Railway Line runs through Dawlish and is considered one of the most scenic railway lines in Britain. It runs along the coast from Exeter to Newton Abbot providing wonderful views along the Exe Estuary and out to sea. The line runs along the coast under the distinct red brown cliffs and through series of dramatic tunnels, literally a few metres from the shoreline.
