Sicily's Mount Etna continued erupting on Saturday, causing a cloud of ash and smoke to cover the landscape and forcing the closure of nearby airports.
As night fell, spectacular eruptions lit up the sky and rivers of smoking red lava streamed down the slopes of the volcano.
During the night the eruption was accompanied by a strong emission of ash that led to the closure of the nearby airports of Catania and Comiso.
In the morning, due to the decrease of emission of volcanic ash, the airport of Comiso returned fully operational while the Catania airport has partially reopened with a limitation of arrivals to six planes per hour.
