Checking the ripeness of sloes for making sloe gin or vodka. You'll need a screw-top jar or bottle, some ripe sloes, sugar and either gin or vodka. Cant get sloes? Replace with damsons or Bullace.
Put the clean, slightly squashed sloes (none of this prick with a pin nonsense - just lightly press them to break the skin) into a bottle or jar, cover with ordinary sugar, pour over the gin or vodka, screw the top on and shake to dissolve the sugar. Place this into a cool cupboard and shake daily for a month.
Drain off the liquor into a clean, sterilised bottle (a run through a dishwasher on hot does the trick), label and it's ready to drink in 2 months.
The more sugar you add the more syrupy the end drink will be.
