On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the rise in mpox cases a global public health emergency. Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is caused by the monkeypox virus and presents symptoms such as rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and headache. The disease spreads through close contact with infected individuals or animals. The WHO's declaration comes amid a surge in mpox cases, particularly in Africa, with over 14,000 cases and 457 deaths reported as of August 22. In this context, several social media posts have emerged claiming that the WHO has ordered countries to prepare for "mega lockdowns" in response to the outbreak. One notable post from August 19 states: “World Health Organization Orders Governments To Prepare for ‘Mega Lockdowns Due to ‘Deadly Monkeypox’ Strain.”
