Bihar is the poorest state in India - because a report by NITI Aayog said that Bihar has the highest proportion of people living in multidimensional poverty, with over 33% of the population falling in this category.
But how is Bihar so poor?
Well, the main reason is that the people of Bihar are unable to find work. Even though Bihar has one of the youngest populations in India, with a median age of just 22 years, most of this potential workforce remains untapped.
Only 12% of Bihar’s population lives in urban areas, which is significantly lower than the national average of 35%. So 88% of Bihar still resides in villages and rural areas, where the only option to earn money is agriculture.
As a result, over 80% of Bihar’s population relies on agriculture for their income, either directly or indirectly.
So the combination of lack of education, skills, and job opportunities means the state has no means to earn money.
Despite having a population larger than Japan, Bihar’s per capita GDP is only 30% of India’s average. This puts Bihar on par with some of the poorest nations in Africa.
But things weren’t always this bad.
In fact, Bihar was one of the most powerful regions in ancient India. It was home to the kingdom of Magadha, which eventually became one of the most powerful kingdoms in ancient India.
The literacy rate might be disappointing today, but Bihar was also home to Nalanda University, and it was also the birthplace of religions like Buddhism and Jainism.
So how did Bihar go from being a powerful state to becoming the poorest state in India? What was the series of events that led to such a dramatic decline?
Why do Indians share equal fault with the British for Bihar’s current condition? Is there still hope for Bihar, or is it already too late?
