STORYLINE:
Demonstrators who have gathered in Berlin for the annual May Day protests have begun to protest earlier than expected.
Riot police fired water cannons to disperse crowds of angry leftwingers who threw rocks at the police on Monday night.
The protest, attended by about 600, took place in former East Berlin, in a square called Boxhagener Platz.
When the full quota of 3000 police came on the scene, they outnumbered the protestors by five to one.
In another part of Berlin, thousands of demonstrators protested peacefully.
Left-wing May Day protests have been banned in Berlin this year, trying to end the annual mayhem here.
But fears have been sparked that the violence will actually be worse, fears which will be fueled by these clashes.
City officials are bent on ending Berlin's reputation for drawing what it calls "riot tourists", especially now that the capital has returned here and the city is trying to make good on its long-frustrated ambitions to reach world-class status.
Though the leftists have been banned, a court overturned a ban on a far-right party's demonstration also on Tuesday that's likely to draw potentially violent counter-demonstrators.
