The Sumerian poem, "The Descent of Inanna" (c. 1900-1600 BCE) chronicles the journey of Inanna into the underworld to visit her pregnant, recently widowed sister, Ereshkigal. In some interpretations of the myth, she does this to challenge her authority and usurp her power. But others see it as a metaphor for our descent to the deepest parts of ourselves to find healing.
In the myth, Inanna must leave behind one of her sacred objects/powers at each gateway on the way down, arriving at her sister’s throne room “naked and bowed low”… perhaps representing the stages of ego-death we must experience to become whole? Ereshkigal turns her into a corpse and hangs her on a hook for 3 days and 3 nights until her faithful servant Ninshubur is able to get help from Inanna’s father. Enki.
Enki sends two “galla”, transexual beings created "neither male nor female", who enter the underworld like flies to surround Ereshkigal and mourn with her. She is so grateful for their empathy she allows them to take Inanna’s body. They revive Inanna with the food and water of life and she rises from the dead.
The “Descent of Inanna” is considered one of the first epic poems ever written and is really quite powerful and compelling to read – here’s the link if you want to make the journey with her!
