For those of us with HIV U=U stands for 𝐔𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 = 𝐔𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞
This means those with HIV who are taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) daily as prescribed cannot sexually transmit the virus to others. The viral load indicator is used by doctors as one method of diagnosing HIV.
This scientific evidence was gathered from several studies. The studies included thousands of heterosexual and gay couples in which one partner had HIV and the other did not. Over the course of the studies, they found that there was not a single HIV transmission from an HIV-positive partner who had an undetectable viral load.
A high HIV viral load is generally considered above 100,000 copies per milliliter of blood, but you could have 1 million or more. The virus is at work making copies of itself and the disease can progress quickly if you're undiagnosed and not on medication.
That was where I found myself two years ago with the shocking diagnosis of HIV AND AIDS.
BUT just to be clear, I AM UNDETECTABLE!!! I'm faithful in taking my meds and doing everything I can to get healthier and feel better. The struggle I'm having is my immune system hasn't recovered from the years I went undiagnosed.
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐔 = 𝐔 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐈𝐕 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞'𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝. I know that I personally didn't know much about HIV when I was diagnosed. By educating others I hope to help take the fear out of what often feels like a scary diagnosis.
When a person is undetectable, condoms are not required to prevent HIV transmission, but being undetectable does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.
Today's HIV meds are normally just one pill once a day. However because my CD4 count is below 200 I also take a prophalaxis (preventative) antibiotic. And because of my age, family history, HIV damage, etc I take many more medications. It's a lot. It's just a lot. And I take the very basic of supplements and it feels overwhelming.
