Let's talk about dry sockets, what they are, how to prevent them, and treatment options if you end up getting one!
A “dry socket” (alveolar osteitis) is something that happens after a tooth extraction when your body doesn’t heal properly. As with other wounds, you need a blood clot to fill in the area so that the site can start to heal. If for any reason that clot comes loose, falls out, or doesn’t form at all after a tooth is pulled, it creates a painful condition most people call “dry socket.”
The most common situation where a person will experience dry socket symptoms is when they have their wisdom teeth removed. Since 3rd molar extractions tend to involve some type of oral surgery, the recovery process can take a bit more time. Dry socket in wisdom tooth extractions can be avoided, but it still happens in approximately 2-5% of tooth removal procedures. Some sources say it affects up to 1-in-5 wisdom tooth cases.
