Responding to demands for increased performance and efficiency, MTS continues to integrate electric actuation throughout its portfolio of test and simulation solutions.
MTS’ pursuit of electric actuation started with its development of optimized permanent magnet electric motors for powering Formula 1 Transmission Test Systems. Compact and extremely power-dense, these rotary drives were soon adapted to supply spindle torque for Flat-Trac® Tire Force & Moment Measurement Systems, increasing system torque and response and yielding dramatic improvements in performance.
MTS has gone on to integrate rotary electric actuation into tire rolling resistance measurement systems, tire tread wear simulators and full-vehicle dynamometers, ride comfort roadways and handling roadways.
Linear electric actuation was first explored by MTS for driving materials testing load frames, and today is available in MTS Criterion® and MTS Acumen® materials test systems.
MTS’ focus on linear electric actuation intensified with the acquisition of EMA damper test systems and ePost tire-coupled road simulators, both renowned for their highly accurate and repeatable performance; clean, quiet and energy efficient operation; and compact, low-maintenance designs. Spinoffs from this technology acquisition include the new Model 320 ePost and the Model 853 Damper NVH System.
The most prominent recent addition to MTS’ electric portfolio is the MTS Vehicle Dynamics Simulator (VDS), which features a McLaren Applied Technologies-designed, linear electric 6DOF dynamic motion platform that delivers high-fidelity driver-in-the-loop simulation and is both compact and easy to deploy.
