Interested in observing a wide variety of wildlife? There are few, if any, better places to sit down and quietly watch for mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, fish, and reptiles than at a beaver pond. It's nature's magnet habitat. A beaver pond is not merely a place where beavers happen to live; it’s a natural community like no other, that draws together a large percentage of the animal species of the region.
This film series spans a year's time at typical beaver ponds in New England.
In Part 1 ([ Ссылка ]), we looked at what takes place in early spring, as the pond comes back to life after a cold winter.
In Part 2, we follow wildlife in late spring, as nesting season progresses, new life develops, and young beavers disperse.
We'll see:
- nesting warblers, ospreys, great blue herons, phoebes, bluejays, red winged blackbirds, and other birds.
- mating northern water snakes and snapping turtles
- a painted turtle depositing eggs
- green frogs, bullfrogs, gray tree frogs, and their tadpoles
- dragonfly larvae underwater and transforming into adults
- herons fishing and feeding young
- beavers building a dam
- pileated woodpecker feasting on carpenter ants
- much more
