These baby shrews were found in a small stone yard in a wood in Burpham near Guildford. The wood is managed by a man who was working in the yard and disturbed the shrew mother who ran off leaving seven babies with their eyes still closed. On WAF advice, he waited for an hour or two but the mother did not return. So local volunteer Sally went & picked them up. Volunteer Libby did a superb job of handrearing them and this footage was taken just 2 days before they were released!!
They have very sleek brown coats and are keeping themselves very clean by washing themselves and with their toilet area outside the nest.
As adults, common shrews are voracious hunters of insects and worms with sharp iron-strengthened red teeth and are themeselves hunted by owls and other raptors. Keep a keen lookout when walking and you might just glimpse a 'caravan' of shrews...a mother leading her babies from a disturbed nest each using that long nose to hold on to the tail of the one on front! :o)
They have had our best care and now they have their second chance back out in the wild!
Good luck little guys! :D
