The utasava moorthies of Ranganatha and Thaayar or Mahalakshmi in Srirangam Temple were taken away from Srirangam during the 13-14th century to safeguard them from the invading Sultan's army. The moolavars were also walled to hide/protect them from destruction.
While Ranganatha's utsavar and moolavar were back in worship after a few decades, the story of Thaayar's hidden vigrahas took a different direction. Ultimately how she decided to reveal herself to her devotees at Srirangam makes a very fascinating tale!
A very interesting anecdote that not many know about.
