As of 2020, solar electricity is now the cheapest form of energy available for much of the world. Over the past several years, the scale of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations have grown from residential systems sized for single family homes, to systems large enough to power commercial and industrial buildings. The reduced cost and increased scale of photovoltaic technology has made solar PV an attractive investment for schools.
School buildings consume considerable amounts of electricity, especially those that use electricity for heating and/or cooling of the building space. Investing in solar electricity can provide significant financial benefits to schools, offsetting large operational costs for the purchase of energy.
Since most school districts operate more than one building, and since it is usually not possible to pursue multiple solar construction projects at the same time, it is prudent for schools to formulate a strategic plan for solar development. In this webinar, CREATE will present a Solar Roadmap planning process to help schools assess sites for their solar potential and to prioritize solar investments. A ten-step guide to creating a Solar Roadmap will be shared that is part of a new Solar Toolkit developed by CREATE.
