A beautiful story narrated by Swamini Supriyananda depicts how River Ganga came to flow to Earth from Lord Shiva’s head via his one matted lock of hair.
Pujya Gurudev, Swami Chinmayananda, used to explain that the River Ganga is the flow of sacred knowledge. We need it to find peace for our restless souls. Also, it’s so sacred, vast and powerful that we need a master to hold it for us, just as Lord Shiva held it in his head. Then, the master judges the amount of knowledge the student needs when they come pleading. the master gives just the right amount the student can digest and assimilate. In time, those little bits of knowledge become a raging river, not unlike River Ganga.
Just as the river continues to flow, knowledge, too, continues to flow from master to student. That student then imbibes it and becomes a master himself/herself before giving it back to the society, to the next hungry student.
Lord Shiva started the flow of sacred knowledge and it continues to flow, even today.
