This is a first look and review of my new Legacy Brand MEGA Coin Ring Center Punch and Spacer Set. I have been making coin rings for a couple months now and found one of the more difficult aspects to be getting a straight even hole in the center of coins. I started out drilling, and while yes that's fairly easy to be straight, it's difficult to hold and not damage dozens of different diameter sized coins w/o damaging them. Then I got the Harbor Freight punch set, and it was faster to punch than drill, but I had difficulty 'consistently' keeping an acceptable centered hole. I filed a lot to make up for it. I looked into the different options available, multiple cards to make the HF punch work better, several very nice punch and die sets from other coin ring makers. After a lot of comparison shopping for my needs and wants and the different versatility, options, and prices of punches and die kits, sets, etc., I decided to give the Legacy Brand MEGA Coin Ring Punch a try.
In the video, I had just received the punch set in the mail just an hour or so before venturing out to the garage (brrr. it was only 21 deg in there.. lol) to give it a try and video the results. I had not used it before and only marked the top of the punch and dies with steel marker pen to make it easier to line up the top of each of them. The pros to this unit are 5 different sized punches and 61 different sized spacers. That's a lot of options for nearly any coin. The only con (with a caveat) so far is having to sand off excess plastic on the inner and outer diameters of the spacers to get coins to fit properly, and for the spacers to fit into the bottom body die holder. The caveat to this con is that I'd rather have them just a hair bigger so I can make each fit perfectly, and I think its safe to assume the reasonable price for this punch and spacer set would be quite a bit more expensive if the mfgr (increased processes) had to make sure each spacer fit perfectly. I'm perfectly ok sanding a little to make the fit nice.
It's really easy for even a beginner like me to use this set up and get straight centered holes in a variety of different sizes and types of coins. I hope you enjoy the video!
