Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) seems to be chiefly remembered for his service music – anthems, settings of the Communion Service, Morning & Evening Services and so on – but was much more prolific than that. He was one of the founding professors of the Royal College of Music at the age of only 29 and from 1887, Professor of Music at Cambridge University. Other music by him includes seven symphonies, nine operas and much chamber music.
This piece is the last of his second set of Six Short Preludes and Postludes, Op 105 and bears the date February 1908. It is a powerful, forward-driving piece but with great lyricism nonetheless.
