Connected, Autonomous Vehicle (CAV) technology will revolutionize the transportation and offers a variety of user benefits, including travel time savings, higher levels of safety, a more enjoyable travel experience, lower insurance costs, enhanced mobility for the elderly or disabled, and the potential to shift permanent car ownership to an on-demand paradigm reducing overall user costs to operate a vehicle. CAVs have the potential to drastically reduce the human costs from car accidents and the economic impact of the losses. Despite some optimistic predictions that CAVs will be widely adopted by 2030, there are many uncertainties about CAVs.
This talk presents a thorough literature review on the adoption of these technologies, issues related to them, and the impact of automated, connected, electric, and shared vehicles on transportation revenue collection both in and outside North Carolina. Using
NC FIRST Commission Report and NC Moves 2050 as key sources, we will develop various scenarios to study the impact of CAVs on transportation revenue in North Carolina.
