Given in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center, Brigham Young University, on Saturday, November 11, 2017.
The theme of the recital was "The Creation," and this piece helped to describe the third day of creation, when the land was formed. The ballade consists of variations on a "mountain song" by the greatest Norwegian composer of the 19th Century. I knew the piece's length would be a challenge for most audience members, so I came up with a story that matched the song, in typical "Fantasia" style. Thanks to my amazing director wife, Samm, for leading rehearsals of a troupe of pantomimers that brought the story to life! Watch for themes of greed, kindness, and the consequences our choices bring, for good and for ill.
