The Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) paper requires you to wear the shoes👞 of an Audit Manager.

It will test if you are able to analyze🤔, evaluate😕 and conclude👍 on the audit assignment engagement and other audit issues in the context of best practice (as contained in accounting and auditing standards).

AAA questions are mostly scenario-based.

NO MARKS for regurgitating theory, unless the examiner specifically requires a theory to be discussed.

You must know how the audit works from beginning to end because you can never know which aspect of the audit you will be tested on.

Exam questions may require you to review the audit team’s actions in planning and performing the audit. For this, you need to know the auditing standards (ISAs) to see whether the audit has been appropriately planned & performed and if not, the further actions that the audit team will need to take.

AAA is a discursive paper. You will have to communicate your answer in words. In English. You will not be penalized for poor grammar or spelling mistakes, but you must be able to communicate your answer in a professional manner, exhibiting both depth and breadth. Here is where EXAM TECHNIQUE comes in.

Exam technique will be a guide to help you write concisely without wasting time.

Exam technique will also help the student to be focused. The examiner’s report produced after each exam often comments that a significant minority of candidates, see a “word/topic” in the exam question and get carried away by writing everything they know about that topic. The examiner will not be impressed if you do this. It is a total waste of time & will not earn you any marks. Your answer must be focused and relate to the facts in the scenario.

Using exam techniques also helps the student stay clear of regurgitating audit or accounting theory. Exam techniques help you apply what you know to the scenario. It is not writing out long essays that are going to impress the examiner. You will be surprised, the examiner often says that some of the best answers are brief BUT relate specifically to the information & issues in the scenarios.

Students often think that they can easily pass Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) because they passed Audit and Assurance (AA) and Financial Reporting (FR). Indeed, passing those two papers is important. But the examiner stresses that AA & FR represent only basic knowledge. Students must realize that the AAA is a higher-level auditing paper & that it is not a repeat of AA.

The examiner also emphasizes that higher-level accounting requirements will be examined in AAA. Therefore, the candidate needs to have cleared Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) before attempting AAA.

The AAA paper is a challenging paper and much is required by way of preparation to be able to pass this paper.
