78-year-old Elvira Mamutova from the Crimean city of Bakhchysarai was deported from the peninsula when she was 7 years old. A Hromadske journalist visited her her to find out how she feels and how she lives today as a witness of the biggest tragedy in the history of the Crimean Tatars. Elvira Mamutova, who managed to come back to her motherland from Uzbekistan, told us what she cares about and what she dreams of.
The deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 was ordered by Joseph Stalin as a form of collective punishment for alleged collaboration with the Nazi occupation regime during 1942–1943.
