In this animation, we will briefly demonstrate ablation of the lung tumors. Ablation of the lung tumors is commonly performed utilizing CT scan guidance by an interventional radiologist in an outpatient setting.
To begin, the patient lies on the procedure table and the initial CT images of the chest is done.
The location of the tumor in the lung is again determined, and ablation antennae entry site is marked on the skin.
Then, the access site is sterilized. This is followed by covering the access area by a surgical drape.
The skin and outer pleura are numbed with a local anesthetic at the access site.
A small nick may be made in the skin to facilitate passage of the ablation antennae through the skin.
Pending on clinical factors and interventionist preference:
Either the microwave ablation antennae is advanced through the skin, pleura, and lung parenchyma till the tip of ablation antenna is placed within the lung tumor under CT guidance. Then, the heat base ablation is performed.
Or, the cryoablation antennae is advanced through the skin, pleura, and lung parenchyma to place the tip of cryoablation antenna within the lung tumor under CT guidance. This is followed by alternative phases of freeze and thaw are then applied per interventionist preference. Additional time is sometimes required if multiple antennas are required for larger tumors.
At the end, the antenna is removed and dressing is placed at the access site on the skin.
