Documentary revealing how Wagner's epic Ring Cycle came to life in the Met Opera's most ambitious production.

Visionary director Robert Lepage's jaw-dropping production of Wagner's 16-hour, four-part Ring Cycle comes to Cineworld in glorious HD over the next few weeks. As a curtain-raiser, award-winning film-maker Susan Froemke goes behind the scenes to explore the creation of this amazing spectacle. Five years in the making, her documentary reveals the incredible artistic and technical challenges involved in staging the most extraordinary production in the Met's distinguished history. At its centre is a vast machine comprising independently moving planks, inspired by the motion of tectonic plates. For performers such as star soprano Deborah Voigt, navigating its movements and steep inclines proves an additional challenge. Nerves are frayed and setbacks endured as rehearsals begin. But the result is nothing short of a triumph, as the opera Wagner himself thought impossible to stage astonishes and delights audiences.
